Most likely not the original engine.
I don't have the engine number handy.
A plate on the engine states it was rebuilt 1985 in Sydney.
Single carby, dual exhaust pipe/ muffler.
Will get the engine number soon as I can.
the instruments are the earlier style, not the later type found in Mk4s.

Just been chasing that chassis number on the AWM old records.........yes the closest I got was chassis 2501 MK4 1968..............this thing of my friends has early lucas generator and oil bath air cleaner all still in place original and working.
What exactly was the difference between MK3 and a MK4.
I know the Mk3 as I remember it
Fibre glass bonnet and front mud guards , single carby, single exhaust,slightly different instrument style to later MKs
Swinging pedant brake pedal and air valve accessed via bonnet.
Mk4 metal shorter bonnet treadle type brake pedal/valve mounted on floor.
Different engine cover and later style instruments etc.
Did the MK4 have dual master cylinders like the 6x6 or a single.
I know some Mk 4s had the dual exhaust system, but not all.
The odd MK 4 even had a twin carby motor from a 6x6 if nothing else was advailable.
Altenator and paper air filter which needed diiferent engine cover.
Am I correct so far???????

Yes Mick you have nailed it and found that engine number in the AWM records which I couldn't find.
It all adds up..............Front end collision and a bent chassis rail.???????????????
The truck would have been only Four years old,so it's worth while doing a full rebuild with new chassis and cabin nose.
The mod plate is fully stamped out explaining the above.
Also it explains the mixture of early MK3 and later MK4 components.
Explains the lack of no 2500 chassis details in the records and no chassis number plate ever been fitted near radiator.
The current 2500 chassis number is not stamped all in a line, but as Three lines which is unusual.
Another thing which backs up the above is the engine rebuild date on the motor and disposal date of Army registered 170_415 being 1987 which would be a logical date for this truck to go to the SME museum at Moorebank.
We know the engine rebuild in 1985 was in Sydney.

The truck is now so close to historic rego and the only thing now missing is the jerry can holder frame..........In time one will be found.
