My nephew was telling me that if an adult has a bike licence and a bike on rec rego 1 junior rider can legally ride trails with them. I have had search around today on the internet but can not find any info regarding this. Only thing I can find is that you need to have a motorcycle learners permit and be 17yrs and 9mths old at a minimum to get rec rego.
Can anyone enlighten me more?
That is not true.
They are trying to bring in 'rec licenses for kids', and what they are looking at as part of the ruling that 1 licensed adult per child. Child must ride behind adult. Blah blah. If you are on faceache (Facebook), look up 'rec licenses for kids'.
You are right Chris - that's how it currently is, but as Damien points out people are trying to get it changed.

I would have thought the insurance aspect would kill it.... but who knows.

It does sound logical, but I could not verify the source of the info - it is one of those he heard from someone who was told by someone else.
As mentioned in one of the links - at 12 you can get a boat licence and a gun licence. If you do not own a property - and no MX clubs in your area - where is a young person going to learn to ride.
I am all for kids learning to ride and drive at a young age, providing they are taught correctly and have the appropriate safety gear.
If they are capable riders/drivers when they finally get on the road they can concentrate far better on their roadcraft. At 12-13 years of age we were lucky enough to be riding our BSA Bantams and Honda Benleys around the scrub. Other than a few straight out exhausts and some noise pollution, we weren't causing any one any grief.
Cheers, Mick.
