I used to ride a bmw r100gs paris-dakar and now I have a ktm 640 supermotard.
I am looking at getting a ktm 950 adventure or bmw r1150gs adventure.
I test rode this yesterday
I was very impressed.

I'm into adv riding in a big way, i've got my trusty BMW GS and go wandering about on all the back tracks etc around here, we've got a big ride coming up in August to Gascoyne junction which should be interesting, we'll probably cover around 10000 kms in 3 weeks, hopefully....
I also run a particularly nasty Kawasaki ZX-12R which is substantially modified. It's cost me most of my pointsso it's coming off the road this year, i may put it on the drag strip for a little fun
Anyway, thats my other fix, anyone else?
Bill

G'day Lewy, Yup they are a nice bike, particularly the S model you'vce got there, i took one for a few test rides when i was looking for a bike.
Theres a thread going over on advrider at the moment in the aussie regional forum about which one to get which may help, plus theres always the search function as this has been discussed a lot.
Basically, if you're doing more dirt than tar, get the 950, if you're doing more tar than dirt, get the bmw. I found that when it came time to buy the bike the price for either bike was identical at around 19.5k
The other thing i liked about the bmw is it's basic technology = easy to fix, maintain etc a lot like our old LR's
Enjoy making the decision!
Here's my Guzzi SP3, used to be into big trailees, Tengai, Super Tenere etc but bought a Landy for the off road stuff.Going to take 3 weeks off mid next year and take the Guz for a lap of OZ, just so when ppl ask what I did for my hols, I can say"Rode my bike around the country".

will do will be comin thru the Hill anyway, thanks for the offer, bought it with 20000k on the clock last year, with the standard pipes, first thing I did was put a Pipemaster system on it, and you thought Semi exhaust brakes were loud.

Why are you going for the 1150 Adventure instead of the 1200?Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought BMW was offering 1200GS Adventures at a real good deal at the moment?Originally posted by lewy110

Evenin Crump,
Nah the 1150 adventures being run out now ready for the new 1200 adventure due in June i think. The new 1200's are a fair bit lighter but the use a fair amount of plastic and new "can-bus" technology (basically reduces the amount of wiring etc used on the bike). They're not a bad bike but just not quite to my taste, after years spent on Jap tupperware torpedoesi wanted something made of steel like my old Brit bikes......ah Norton's........now theres a bike!
Old Dog, are you talking Gascoyne Junction here in WA? If you are thats a huge ride from Cobar. You must be keen. I would not call myself a biker, but a bike rider.
