Parts of Europe, Canada, USA and Russia have been running speedway bikes on the Ice for Years, and they do it on an oval track. The riders usually wear a set of goggles under a face shield due to studs coming off of the tyres.

A bit of trivia, It was the observation of a Motor GP rider of the Ice racers with the knee down sliding around corners that lead to the current riding style of MotoGP riders, can not remember what year though, or who was the first to try it on a tarmac track.

I know Kenny Roberts used that style before it became the norm, I think the first that I know of was a young Finnish rider Jamo Saarinen started it, him being an Ex Ice racer.

how did they ride before they started putting their knees down?
can't imagine it, as it just seems natural that your knee would come out when cornering
