Drawer slides..I'm not bright enought to work this out

    Guys

I have just build a unit to go in the back of a car

So the problem I'm now faced with is buying drawer slides...I did not realise how bloody expensive they were!!!
The most annoying thing is the longer you go the more weight they can carry the more expensive they get. However I dont really need a huge weight carrying capacity like 100kg because I'm only carrying a few tools I reckon I could easily get away with 30/45kg as the draws are actually quite small, but you cant find them (well I cant anyway)

one drawer is 600mm in length and the other is for arguments sake 900mm in length (its actually a bit more than that like 112 or something like that but just using more common sizes here for ease).

My question is I have come across a drawer slide that is 700mm closed length but extends out to 1400mm

Is it possible for me to fit a small drawer slide on to a long drawer? or does the entire drawer have to be supported?

the difference in a 700mm slide to a 900mm is nearly $50 so thats a big saving on something I was hoping wouldn't cost me to much to build but already has cost me a packet

Lou, try UES in Wetherill Park - sort of wholesalers.

    Welcome to UES

We bought ours there for Sharon's 130 about 18 months ago.

I was looking at your Defender draw slides when Ian was here last week & I thought they were much better than the 'off the shelf' slides.

Is it worthwhile copying that design ?

I'll give them a call Erich thanks

However they still only do up to 700mm closed length so I still need my original question answering

To answer your original question Lou, you could use the shorter 700mm slides on a longer draw if they were positioned right, but be aware the if you hang a part of the draw past the end of the slide, then the loading in the front of the slide may be greater than what it was intended for, and could lead to premature wear or failure. If the draw is only going to be lightly loaded, then you should be able to get away with it, but if you are going to be loading it right up, I would fork out for the longer ones.

    Cheers - Gav.

It's just a few bearings that run against a rectangular section of tube steel. Nice, simple & very strong I thought.

i have just replaced the slides for my fridge and draw.........the last sets last 5 years so i brought another two sets

    $22 a pair from memory

my draw is the full length of the cargo space 1100mm maybe and does not support the whole draw.......keep in mind that a 700mm slide on a longer draw means some of the draw does no come all the way out although it easily accessible

turf the bearings idea and go buy some strips of PFTE nylon slider... like they use on boat trailers..

4 pieces per draw(2 on the bottom 1 on each side) and a couple of bits of ally stripping to act as a guide.

    done.
