    Diff whines

A friend has a Mitsubishi Van that has a loud whine whenever under acceleration. Any suggestions as to what it could be and how urgently he should get it looked at?

    Thanks

Noisy diffs used to be very common, and they could go for decades without attention or failure. BUT modern diffs are usually pretty quiet unless there is a significant problem. If this problem is that there is no oil in the diff, then failure is imminent, as it is if the noise reflects a bearing that is failing. If it is because of a slight loss of preload on the pinion bearings, then it may not be a problem, nor if it has had water in it but now has the correct oil, or if it has been badly adjusted when being repaired.

However, if I owned it, I would investigate as a matter of urgency to find out why it is noisy - a simple step would be to drop the oil and see what came out apart from oil, and check the prop shaft yoke for sideways movement (assuming it is rwd).

I agree with JDNSW, it is probably a pinion bearing issue.

You will find van's amplify any noise due to the uninsulated body, and the shape, similar to a tin box. This will cause the diff to appear noisier than it actually is.
I have had a fleet of Mitsy vans for many yrs & some did get a wine in the diff,we used to add a nulon product called G70,& this used to fix the wine.We never had a diff repaired ever, most did around 250 to 300K before we got rid of them. Some actually had a wine from new,but the manufacturer didn't want to do anything about it.

As others have said, the diff you are talking about may have been damaged or is worn out,but using the G70 is still probably worth a go.
