    Mixer Gearbox - oil options.

Hi all, another question for those with a knowledge of oils. I have a Whitlands Engineering 3 Tonne feedmixer wagon (they now make log splitters) and I'm just going through the process of checking bearings, greasing and changing oils before firing up the feedlot in a week. Anyway I dropped the oil from the gearbox today so I could fix a crack and I was wondering what oil I should be replacing it with.

Last time around I used 80/90 gear oil however that was purely a guess as there were no instructions or manuals with the machine when we bought it. After a full season the oil still looked as good as the day I put it in. Now the question is this, should I be running 80/90 or would it be okay if I used Multi TracTrans instead? The reason I ask is I'm out of 80/90 and being New Year everybody's shut, on the other hand I've got 44 gallons of MTT sitting in the shed and it would be nice if I can keep standardizing my oils.

The gearbox runs at 540 of the pto and then step reduces to somewhere between 150 to 250 RPM (that's an educated guess, not exact). The gearbox is circular and doesn't ever seem to run hot or even warm.

    Cheers as always.

Slasher g/boxes, etc usually run an SAE 90, so anything from a 75W-90 on would be fine. (75W-90 gear oil = 15W-40 engine oil in viscosity terms)

What spec is your Multi-trac fluid ?
    10W-30 or 15W-40 ?

If it meets CAT TO-4 I'd have no hesitation, TO-2/GL-4 would be ok.

    Cheers Rick,

The oil I've been using is OCOMA MTT | Oilman the specs are on there, as far as I can tell it's Cat TO-2/GL-4. I have no idea what these things mean though. I never knew that the viscosity of gear oil was denoted in different terms from engine oil, thats my "learn something new" for the day.

If you can hold your hand on the g/box when working, I'd use your MTT oil.

It's not working hard enough to warrant anything heavier.
