Is a regular occurrence on these - the actual key lock section can be removed and start by putting a screw driver in the slot that joined the lock with the starter switch.

Replace from a wrecker and if you need it get it rekeyed to match the door locks can be done.

Probably easier said than done. These were not big sellers and are mostly 30+ years old. The modern day wreckers tend not to keep old stuff, sending the bones to scrap as they prefer near new vehicles to dismantle for their high value parts. Look for an old style wrecker who parks the wrecks in the weeds and leaves them there forever. These are a dieing breed in the major cities as their yards which were once considered out in the boondocks have become valuable inner city property with urban expansion.

Yep, we've hit the wreckers, closest we came was an 85 model which had the integrated steering lock and doesn't fit.

The lady is very recently widowed, and a bit "confused" at the present time.
She was about to go off to a friends for dinner, grabbed the wrong set of keys in her rush, pushed the key into the ignition, turned it, you know the rest!

Typical of Jap makers, I tried to dis assemble the lock system to try to remove the broken key, no go, damned thing is a locked in job, can't pull the ignition lock apart so replacement is the only option.

Ah well, back to the hammer and chisel approach I suppose.

Did you try Subawreck in Adelaide? He keeps old stuff there.

We ripped the ignition lock out and took it down to the local locksmith.

That Lady will surely watch more carefully when she grabs the car keys next time. I hope!
