    Wind up caravan doesn't

Or it does now, after much effort, sweat and swearing and half a can of WD-40.

I think the issue is where the long screw sits in the bracket on the crossmember. It's meant to turn in the bracket, and I suspect it has dried out over time.

What sort of grease would be best to use here? Any suggestions?

After you give it all a good clean and grease, see if you can enclose all that stuff in a length of inner tube or canvas to keep it all clean. Also dont forget to look at any pulleys that the wires wind around and any struts that may be binding. For the struts and pulleys you could use PTFE spray, available from an auto parts shop. (It's spray on teflon and very slippery). Make sure everything is cleaned of any muck first.

Thanks. the inner tube is a good idea, given it all a good dose of teflon spray already, and not helping, although it's all certainly a lot cleaner and better greased than a week ago. Starting to suspect it could be the winder chain on the front of the caravan.
