    Bearing shrinkage

I am turning a bearing housing for the rear wheel of my race sidecar, and want to know how much do bearings shrink if you chill them? The old housing was a loose fit and it shouldn't have been.

Start with a billet of 7075-T6

    Make lots of swarf.

The bearing is on the right. 1 inch inner 2 inch outer.

I have never measured the difference after chilling as you have to get it installed asap as it returns to original spec pretty quick, but it does make a tight bearing slip in pretty easy.

I would have thought the amount that a steel bearing would shrink if put in the freezer alot less than the expansion of a aluminium housing if heated.

I put some standard LR wheel bearing cups in the freezer to shrink for installing in the hub. IMO it did not make bugger all diference, if anything the condensation was a PITA.

I had to install a boss on a 5" shaft, 6thou interference fit, chilled the shaft with liquid nitrogen and got the boss to 160℃ on a hotplate and they slid together fairly easily with minimal persuasion,

Getting the old boss off was another story, 80tonne ram on porta power and a LOT of heat.....

Most shaft bearings I have met have a slight clearance in the housing. This allows the outer race to creep and equalise wear around the whole ring. If you're going for a press fit make sure your bearing is toleranced for same.
