Decided to replace the automatic transmission fluid in my Peugeot 406 V6. Now this is always a contentious topic (kinda like the "what engine oil is best for my LR300tdi) and opinion will differ. However, this BS idea from manufacturers of "Sealed for life" is a furphy IMO. Anyway, back to the topic, the pug auto box has been a little temperamental, especially around corners slowing down.

I had some LT71141 oil for the 4hp20 box for 1 drain and refil, so did that. Two things that came out of the experience:

1) oil looked OK on dipstick, but clearly wasnt when I drained 3.9 ltrs - check that black shiz out (should be light olive oil colour)

2) level was 500ml short, which kinda explains the behaviour as I had similar in the BMW before I serviced the auto box.

The only issue is the inability to change the filter, being a front wheel drive. So, my experience is check and replace the auto oil and filter and ill do this in another 30k klm or so. Naturally, use the trans oil to suit the box... Dex 3 for example would kill the ZF 4HP20.

Hope this helps.
