    2004 NP pajero diesel

Hi I need advice after writing off my D1 i decided to try a mitsi.
about 3 years ago it was purchased for 20k just recently it has started hunting in idle and fluctuating in speed while driving and holding foot in same position took it to a diesel specialist and was told it is the pump which will cost $5000
dont get me wrong it is a great car but first is this the correct diagnosis?
    secondly am I over capitalizing?

I have never spent that much to get a car fixed in my life have always been able to fix the old D1 300tdi myself in the 6 years I had it I think i have spent max of 2000 on it and the mitsi well over 2000 in the 3 I have had it now.

    Rant over need opinions.
    thanks Rad97

I think your answer is obvious, but I may be biased

Possibly sticky EGR. You could try EGR intake cleaner. I have seen pics of the intake manifold very blocked from exhaust and oil vapour.

I have heard that the pump is a common and expensive failure in those things.

If it's pre common rail ( which I think it will be ) then yep , it's probably pump , if it is common rail then those are symptoms of a faulty suction control valve or gummed up intake manifold butterflies
