I have rebuilt a lot of these and only ever wound the studs in until firm, I was working at a MF dealership at the time and never seen it done any other way. MF35 would have to be the best tractor built

I am currently rebuilding an early Perkins 3.152 indirect injected diesel engine fitted to a 1961 Massey Ferguson 35 tractor.
Does anyone know what the cylinder head stud to cylinder block torque should be?
The cylinder head nut torque is 81Nm (60 lbf ft), which would suggest that the black studs are SAE Grade 8 and lightly lubricated.
The head stud thread is 7/16" UNF (20 TPI).
I have read that the studs should be torqued tighter than the head nuts to prevent the stud loosening when backing of the head nuts when re-torquing a head fitted with a copper gasket, which I am required to use for this rebuild.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi Bbaze,
I'm going to hijack someone elses thread here. My wife has been sending me messages from her sisters today. They have an old 1960's 35 Fergi petrol that is mixing oil with water.
I think there quite keen to get it running. they seem to think it needs a new head... I'm thinking head gasket or liner seals. I really don't have time to look at this for them though.... Is there any "usual" problems with the old 35's that this could beThe parts for the perkins diesel seem to be all over the internet, the petrol versions seem much less well covered. I'm thinking if I throw a new head gasket at it, the thing may well be fine
I certainly don't have the time to touch it (especially when it's 2 hours away) if I pull the head and find it needs a full rebuild.
