    D3S LED globes

Has anyone tried the LED replacement globes for D3S HID globes that plug into the existing HID ballasts? They range in price from around $60 to $200 for a pair so perhaps there's a difference in performance or quality. My L322's bi-xenons are swamped by the 50W HID fill-ins in my L322 so perhaps LED in the bi-xenons would be an improvement.

There is no way they can match the CRI nor the lumen output - their claims of 70w and 9000lm is just a joke.

They'll look visually brighter - as there is no yellow spectrum in them, so they wash out colour and introduce a heap of glare.

You'll also be adding a small fan (they arent passively cooled) so another failure point!

I’m confused. I thought (and What is a Bi-Xenon Headlight? | Blog | PowerBulbs confirmed) that bi-xenon and HID were the same thing.

The main headlights are bi-xenon (single HID with shutter for low beam) and I've replaced the halogen fill-ins with HID. The fill-in HID very much overpower the bi-xenon high beam.

70W is 2 x 35W for 2 globes, the standard ebay trick and I'm aware that lumens are whatever the seller wants to state but I've yet to see a LED light that comes near an HID for distance. I'm also not fond of 6000K, sticking with 4500K for my HID having found that whilst 3000K is great in rain and fog they're rather useless driving on dirt roads with the sun low behind.

I came across the LEDs on another forum where owners are looking to improve the output from single bi-xenons in L494s & L405s, but nothing even anecdotal yet.

Just wondering why this thread was moved to non-LR technical chat as it is very much LR related because D3S globes are used in the bi-xenon headlights of most late model LRs.

It was in General Chat, not in TC.

$60 a pair LED versions of D3S globes have been fitted to the bi-xenon headlight assemblies of my L322 for a month now. Their whiter 6000K light than the 4500K high-beam HID fill-ins is discernible but they're doing the job for me so are staying fitted. On low-beam they don't seem to have given anything away to the D3S having on a few occasions driven on low beam at 100 kph with oncoming traffic, if anything lighting the road better for the second or 2 once back on high beam before the HID fill-ins light-up fully if they've been off for a while.
These globes are powered by the original ballasts so are easy to R&R. No alignment adjustment was required.
