I tend to think almost instantly once it moves around the motor. They never keep that golden colour like a petrol. That said, I think that the older indirect engines like what I think the hilux (and many others) had will soot the oil even quicker.
I serviced my '93 model Hilux before Easter. Drove home and drained the oil into a container in the yard. The next two days it rained and I was not able to complete the job. Two and a half days later it was dry enough for me to finish the job. The sump plug was out all this time and draining. My question is this. How long does it take for new diesel oil to discolour? I have put just under 1000k since the oil change and it is only just starting to go black. As stated '93 model with 300,000 k on the clock.

The oil is there to pick up contaminants. It should discolour in a diesel quite quickly. 1000KM should see it starting to discolour.

SubscriberAgreed that the oil will blacken fairly quickly, especially in an older engine where there,s a bit more contamination from carbon rich combustion gases.
However the Td5's with the centrifugal oil filter go for many thousands of km before their oil starts to turn black.
Those filters are abviously doing a great job of removing contaminants!
( wish I had one my Puma engine)

The oil is discolouring but I thought it should have done this more quickly.

Perhaps due to leaving it to drain for two days, there was less dirty residual oil to blacken the new stuff.
Don.
That is what I am thinking. I couldn't get under the vehicle as there was a puddle under it from the rain, so I left it. Jim
