Thread: noise of 200Tdi in a series

Probably about the same as the 2.25 diesel, I expect, or just as noisy as it would be in a Defender ragtop. Not as noisy as in one with a metal roof, that's for sure, but noisier than a wagon with at least some sound proofing. It may actually be a bit quieter than the 2.25 diesel, as the engine is significantly lower compression ratio.

Thanks John, but not having had a 2.25 I don't know how noisy they are. I've had a defender TD5 and those little engines can be a touch noisy, are they similar? I kinda figured that the ragtop would make it pretty noisy driving about, particularly at speed.

The Td5 is a lot quieter than the 2.25 or the 200Tdi. The ragtop minimises engine/transmission noise, as with the enclosed bodies you get both echoes back and the panels acting as sounding boards. On the other hand, you get a lot of road and wind noise with the rag top, and unless it is properly fitted and tightened, in some circumstances a lot of flapping canvas, although properly set up this should be minimal. But most Series Landrovers give a lot of wind noise because none of the door seals work very well, and a lot of road (and engine/transmission) noise because there is no insulation.

I have a 300 tdi 90 rag top defender and a 110 300 tdi station wagon and the 90 engine sounds quiter than the 110. I believe this is down to all the other noises you get in a ragtop that drown out the sound of the engine

BTW there is not alot of difference between a 300 tdi noise and a 200 tdi noise

I have a 2.25D in a 109" ute. I also have a 300Tdi disco. We bought a few packets of ear plugs before we drove it from Brisbane-Perth.

With earplugs you can just manage to hear the radio on full...

The 200/300tdi would be no noisier. If anything it may be quieter. However at 100kph you are doing 3600 rpm. Fitting a 5-speed when you fit the engine would make things significantly quieter.

thanks crew, I think the 5speed box mated to series transfer is the go and I can handle some nosie just wondering if it was going to be extreme.

I remember riding in a 200tdi Disco years ago and the engine clatter at 100km/h was starting to become intrusive.

So with the 200tdi going into into my uninsulated S3, I expect the racket to be appalling; therefore; my plan is to insulate the gearbox cover and the bulkhead closest to the engine with a lead sandwich and under the seat-box, bonnet and the rest of the bulkhead, with cheaper and lighter acoustic insulation,
