My understanding is that that was a myth. Probably connected with Fiat licensing Lada. The Italians simply did absolutely no rustproofing whatsoever. Sad really, because some of the cars were lovely. I'd have a 124 AC Sport, or a 105 GTV again for sure, except good ones are fetching more than I can afford, possibly due to the rarity of rust free examples.
