Whirring Noise under Accelleration!!
Hey guys,
I have a whirring noise, when my car is under load, sounds like gears meshing without oil, I have checked all fluids and levels...all good. any hints as to where to start looking?
So this noise only happens when i am accellerating, sounds like its under the car too, Also i have changed the tyres so its not road noise from my muddies??
Cheers
Ryan

I've recently had a slightly similar experience that sometimes sounded like i was driving over the freeway edge ripple strips. Tightened up the suspension as an aside and it seems to have disappeared. Hope i haven't just hidden a problem.
Worth a go though.

If the whirring is coming from the front it may be a bearing in the transfer case...possibly the front bearing in that part of the case which houses the viscous coupling. One way to verify this is to remove the front drive shaft and try and 'wobble' the remaining part of the UJ coupling on the front of the transfer case...it should have only very minimal if any, up/down/side-to-side free play.
The other alternative is the front diff.
Take it for a drive minus the front drive shaft and see if the whirring is still there under light acceleration... if not then it's possibly either the t/f case bearing or the diff...
Good luck

Diff noise
Hello there,
Just letting you know that I have whining in my rear diff. happens under load and less when coasting.
Apparently the hard facing on the crown gear wears off causing the noise.
It ends up being a replacement of the diff center as the metal bits end up damaging other parts of the diff as well. It is also suggested to change the bearings at the same time. On replacement you will get no further problems. Or so I am led to believe.
My next course of action is to fit a locker to the rear anyway so I will wait until I have the readies to do this.
