The actual replacing the head unit is of no concern to me, just pay the guy, what my problem is that I don't want the "ye olde" P38 console looking like a rave with with multi coloured lights, flashy things and more controls than the space shuttle. Does anyone know of a "subtle" looking unit?.

The radio I bought has sockets to fit the standard ISO plugs in the car thus making it, for most cars, plug and play.
The sockets don't fit the P38A unfortunately.
Hoewver, the radio also has line level outputs for all channels including the subwoofer so I should be able to use those for the in-door amplifiers.

You might consider McIntosh: McIntosh | MX406
Or a Becker Mexico: BECKER - Great Britain > Automotive > Mexico 7948 > Overview
I recently purchased a VDO Dayton CD 5326X unit from Motor Traders in SA, it has a very restrained front panel, large volume control, NO FLASHING LIGHTS!!! , switchable orange or green illumination, ISO connectors, phone mute, auxiliary input, and it also has a better FM range that any car radio I have ever had. I haven't explored all its functions, but it's sufficiently simple for my wife to manage it.
Is this subtle enough for you Rushy? No flashing lights or fancy LCD displays, just colour coded buttons. You can select source, presets, tracks, volume etc
...until you press the correct button, and then you get lots of gadgets to play with
a good choice if you "want it all" but don't want the "bling look".
Cheers
Paul.

I read the specs on the Becker Mexico, what a unit, but it is hard to justify the cost and a lot of the features won't work here in Luddite land, when will we ever get RDS.
We do have RDS. Your P38A radio should have it and be able to use it.
