I had a fun day under my 2001 HSE yesterday, changing the engine oil and filter, transfer case oil, auto trans fluid and filter and even both diff oils.
I was pretty greasy at the end of it all, but had no dramas.
Anyone contemplating doing your auto trans fluid and filter, on a 2000 and later P38, make sure you have a Torx T27 bit and a set of hex bits that will fit onto a decent ratchet, you will need it!
The drain and fill bolts on the auto trans were changed to hex bolts from 2000, they are also hard to get moving unless you have decent leverage.
I got myself good quality sets of both hex and torx bits with adapters to scale them to fit my 1/2 inch ratchet, so I had plenty of leverage to get them moving. It cost me a few bucks, but I tell you what, worth every cent when you get under there and they work first go with no fuss.
There is one 10mm bolt at the rear of the auto pan that is a bit tricky, but you can get at it wihtout having to remove anything. I used a 10mm ring spanner, but a ratchet with a uni joint would probably be easier, bit tight in there!
