Funny that, ive had 2 TD5 discos and now 2 P38s. The P38 for any sort of travellling, especially on a freeway before you get to your 4wd spot, is just so superior, stable and relaxed. And the fuel usage on the freeway is only about 25% worse in the 4.6. I did find around town the disco a lot more nimble in parking areas. But again, any sort of rough road, and the rangey just, well, ****s on it. I do love the sound of the TD5 though... Now if only i could....

Not much to add that hasn't already been said. I flew over from WA and bought mine in Melbourne a 1998 4.6 HSE, had 142k on it paid just over 10k with new air bags and a suspension problem, drove it back to Perth and got the vehicle over the pits no problem . I bought a Faultmate MSV-2 got into diagnosing stuff which in some ways was quite interesting. Bought parts from TRS in S.A at a reasonable cost and quick delivery, had the old girl just over two years now, I'm getting around 13.5 klms / 100 on a good run, averaging around 14.4 litres / 100 around town, managed to get to 22.6 litres / 100 with a car trailer on and a Suzuki Jimny on the trailer, and a head wind, damn good effort even if I say so myself. The engine has been faultless, very impressed with the comfort and the electronic gizmos. The cruise control stopped working I found a split in one of the small hoses, that's been about it. Service regularly with quality bits. Keep on top of the small repairs. Good luck with your purchase.
Am new to this forum but had very similar experience. Bought 2000 P38 SE from Taree NSW for $9500, 165K 12mths ago, VVGC flew over from Perth picked it up and drove it all over NSW and QLD then on a truck back to the WA. keep the maintenance up and so far no probs, whatsoever. Lovely car on the bitumen but dissapointing in beach sand. Think its the 18" rims and '55' profile tyres. Would love to find out how to turn the traction control off as I suspect this is half the problem

I'd have to agree with Mike there!! I recently did a beach run in my P38 and still had the 38psi in my tyres, was a dream through soft sand! Mind you, i've got the 16" wheels not the 18" ones, and am looking at upgrading the H/T tyres for some M/T's in the very near future for better traction in the loose stuff that mine see's a lot of!
Tyres are the only thing that have let my Rangie down thus far! The traction control works the treat in mud/sand/loose gravel!
