    p38 what can i expect

Folks, Im seriously looking at buying a 2000 hse p38 4.6.It has 143K on the clock and has been very well looked after according to the books and service history.Im going to trade my S11 TD5 Disco which now has 223K , but am wanting a bit more luxury and guts when i comes to towing a van, plus I just love rangies.

What can I expect from this kind of vehicle, IE problems , general fuel consumption, country cycles, and rough service costs.
They are asking $17K with 3 month warranty and have not excused me getting BOR in Qld looking at it.

    Welcome your comments and thoughts
    DDK

My late `99 does just under 16ltrs per 100ks around town and down to 12.5 on a run. I do my own servicing but parts are reasonable especially if purchased from the UK.
A service record would be nice so you can see what work has been done. The drivers door window regulator is a very common failure plus at 10 years old you need to pay attention to the air springs, compressor and suspension valve block which all can be sorted easily as a DIY but would be big $ at a garage. I would factor A$ 1000 for all the above and also a new Radiator if you do the work yourself.

Had 2 td5 discs and now on my second p38. Fuel biggest cost. As above get your parts from UK. Now down to 15.5 around town and fitting new injectors soon for better consumption. I hope. But hey, I got the rangey not a disco. You'll be happy. It's a roller coaster though!

Hi DDK - note you are in Kingaroy. Have a chat with "Razza's Rangie" on this forum... he's a local there and has a P38. Nice bloke and knows his stuff.

    Cheers, Paul.

You just said it all - everything else is irrelevant.

What can you expect? - everything - from extreme highs to extreme lows.

But is it just me or is $17G a tad high for this P38?

Interesting set of initials you have too DDK - exactly the same as mine...and I love Rangies too......cue Twilight Zone music.

I rekon you could get it cheaper!! I got mine for $15k from a car yard (2000 HSE 4.6 with 160 000kms)...

So far i've not spent all that much on mine and it's in tip top shape! Recently I did a water pump which cost me a total of $250 (fitted myself and includes coolant in that price).

Other things to look out for are the aforementioned EAS springs/compressor/valves. I personally think that it's money well-spent if you renew these when they start showing signs of going! It's a part of owning a car with so many electric gizmo's I guess, but if you look after it too you'll probably end up with more in the wallet!

Just make sure it's a good one before you buy it! Get under and inspect the airbags, if they are about to go then you might want to put that in your price negotiations! Pick on every little thing you can when negotiating the price!!

    Cheers

As mentioned before the EAS system and electronics although the later the model the better they got.

They are not a vehicle suited to water either and there is a lot of important electronics under the seats which, if it gets wet will cause you much expense and heartache.

A mates got wet on a crossing and the EAS failed and the rangie dropped on the bump stops in the river and got REALLY wet, the issue too is that if the system is powered when it gets wet it is a replace the lot job.

However I do have mates both in Oz and overseas who own them and love them and there are plenty of retro grades and fixes around to make them more reliable and once sorted they are a very nice bit of gear.

Just prepare to learn about the electronics and sort them out, access to a rovacom or similar hand scanner for the electronics is very handy and a good service history is important.

    Enjoy!

Go get one with a honest forewarning that these cars do like a fair bit of attention... but are great once sorted and kept up to standard.

All the support and knowledge you will need to maintain your sanity (and some of your bank balance!) is on this site.

I really agree with the others though, DO NOT pay that price. You can fly to Melbourne and buy 2 for that! Get a goody and a broke one, then just hire a trailer and tow the broke one home for spares!

Do yourself a favour and have a look on carsales.com and see what Jansens have going. They are generally a pretty good dealer price benchmark. Then just lop $2-5K off their prices and you can see how cheap they can get as private sales down here.

    I have recently bought a Td5 Disco to replace my 95 P38.
After 2 weeks of owning the Disco i think i will be selling it and keeping the old girl. The P38 is way easier to work on than the Disco and as far as i can see the service costs are lower as well. I do all my own work on the vehicles i own and i can tell you the Rangie rules when it come to maintenance.
Even the 4.6 is a little under powered but still a good motor. As previous posts state keep up to date with services and it will serve you well.
I recommend that you put a kill switch on the EAS and have a switch for this on your dash you can cut wear on the EAS by 80% doing so.
