    When a Rangie meets water...

I think the pictures explain themselves!

I went through the first time with no dramas, the water was at the base of my headlights when i went through initially, although it did come over my bonnet. We had to turn back because the next creek was twice as deep, but the water here had risen by about a foot in the 10mins it took us to loop back! And in the half hour it took to recover my car the water had risen by another foot and by then the inside of the car was also full of water!

Yesterday and Today I removed the drivers seat and the BeCM was covered in water (luckily it was clean fresh water), so a mate and I removed both circuit boards and de-waterised them, cleaned all the connectors out, removed the fuses and cleaned inside and out on everything, put it all back together and every electric componenet in the car works fine.

I removed the spark plugs today and gave the car an oil change (4 litres of water in the sump), cranked it over and got rid of all the water in the bores and intake. Tomorrow I'll be heading up to grab new spark plugs, a battery charger due to almost flat battery now, and some more oil and a new filter again! I have a good feeling about it, the car cranked over no worries this afternoon (without the spark plugs), everything looks good and i'm so glad that everything works still!

Lesson learned - water levels rise very quickly. And i'm an idiot for going into it...

I saw the video of Ralph on Youtube which really helped! Having known this I was confident I could tackle the job, the only real difference was that mine had to get towed home and i had water inside the engine! But i've seen that before too (not on any of my cars though), so its a pretty simple job to pull the plugs out and get rid of it! And a good excuse to replace the spark plugs while i'm at it!

Good on you Keithy! Keep your chin up mate... obviously you have it all under control with the progress you've made so far... well done.

Welcome to the exclusive fraternity of Submariner Rangie Captains... Ralphie and I offer you a virtual salute

Ralphie got his going again, and it sounds like you will too, so that just leaves me as the one who went down the ship

    Cheers
    Paul.

Ha ha, cheers Paul! I'm very lucky! I feel a snorkel and 33's with the hard range kit would have seen me through that puddle though! I might tinker with my High setting once i've got the car running again, until such time as i've got a bit more height and a snorkel (hint hint)!

But water that deep... I was rescuing a toyota and became the victim myself... Very stupid move on my behalf! Although i do have a video of my rangie going through it the first time without trouble, so it was probably confidence that led me into it again!

If you can't walk it, dont drive it!

I hear you re the Snorkel (ahem, Raised Air Intake) and so does Andy who has been riding the fabricator for the next/revised/improved design over mine

Just between you and me, I'll let you in on a little secret.... I almost drowned mine on Sunday for want of a bit of sealant... you see the snorkel on mine has a small gap between the air box and the end of the snorkel as I haven't put the sleeve in to fully seal it yet, and I didn't want to do the final liberal application of Sikaflex until I was sure it was all good. Add to this that my inner wheel arches are out as I have been playing with shocks and springs so I have no splash protection.

So what did I do on Sunday? I went on a drive in the Vic High Country as part of the RR 40th event. DT-P38 "twisted my arm" to go on the hard/very hard trip. Dave drove his near-stock P38 through this large-ish muddy water hole and came out the other side no worries. I drove the Hard Rangie in too fast and water went everywhere, and then the engine died. Dave gave me a pull out to dry ground/mud and sure enough there was heaps of water in the air box and the filter was soaked. Lucky for me the plenum intake looked dry, so we cleaned the MAF and it started ok.

You now see why we call the snorkel a "Raised Air Intake". It does not become a snorkel unless the owner of the vehicle ensures that water cannot get in.

    Cheers, Paul.

I was talking to a lady on Sunday at the RR 40th. She and her husband had just returned from Cape York in their P38A.

They did a lot of crossings but they did use a tarp over the front.

    They travelled by themselves.

That reminds me - I really must do something about my 'low' air intake that the previous owner installed.... I think he thought he was helping giving it cooler air by ducting it down to about where the lower foglights are .... Paul's seen it I think and was a bit wide-eyed about it
