    Compartment behind battery tray

    Hi all

    More questions from the noob.

    1) What is the purpose of the tall slim compartment behind the battery in my 2000 HSE?

    2) What can I use (if anything) to restore the whiteness/brightness of my RANGE ROVER letters on the bonnet and tailgate? Are they replaceable/purchasable?

    3) I am trying to get the rear inside panel off in an attempt to pop out a dent where RANGE ROVER is written on the tailgate (looks like where previous owner was pushing the car maybe?) but after removing 6 obvious screws, she wont budge. Any secrets on the next step?

    Thanks again!

    1. It's where the engine ECU sat on the earlier models.
    2. Dunno about cleaning but new sets are available (LR or eBay).
    3. It's been a few years since I took that panel off but there's not much access to the outer skin - mine had a dent there when I bought it.

    (1) The space behind the battery ...(purpose as above) also makes a convenient position for a dual battery controller... or to store misc non-heat sensitive parts /spare nuts and bolts/simple tool kit etc.

    (2) May need to have a look on some of the website of international LR parts sellers... rimmer Bros, British Parts etc in the UK are often a good bet for such bits...and the postage for lightweight stuff is minimal.

    (3) Are you referring to the carpet panel or a metal panel to which it is attached?

It is a plastic panel on the inside lower edge of the upper tailgate, it holds the centre brake lights amongst other things and is directly forward of the "range rover" insignia across the upper tailgate.

    From the manual:

    Lower trim assembly
    1. Release load space lamp from trim panel, disconnect 2 Lucar terminals and remove lamp.
    2. Remove 6 screws securing trim panel to side trims and tailgate.
    3. Release 4 studs securing trim panel to tailgate.
    4. Disconnect high level stop lamp multiplug, if fitted.
    5. Remove lower trim assembly.

The manual is available from Dave's shop on here.

For lettering of the correct font and a bolder look you wont find a better deal than these...... http://http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CHROME-RANGE-ROVER-LETTERING-SPORT-L322-P38-FRONT-REAR-/160506574541?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM& hash=item255eeff6cd
You would have to sort out postage cost but it should not be much, Ask for Royal Mail small Packet.

The space behind the battery is perfect for holding my Sub Woofer Amp, I know it gets hot there but it has not been an issue.

    Thanks for this.

Step three was hard! I could find no way to see what I was doing to "Release the 4 studs". In the end the panel popped off while I was trying to see behind it with no harm done.

I got about 75% of the dents out and learned a bit more about my Rangey

As noted by someone else, that's where the engine computer used to be on earlier P38s. Now its a brilliant place to put the computer for a gas injection LPG system.
