Need P38 A/C specialist in Melbourne

    Hi Everyone
Having problems with my AC in a 1997 P38. Has weak airflow through the face vents. Someone suggested that it could be the blend motors. Does anyone know of someone in Melbourne that specializes in AC repairs for P38's without charging like a wounded bull and can get to the source of the problem. thanks

You don't need an aircon specialist. You need a Land Rover specialist.

The blend flap servo motors won't affect airflow.

Does your distribution flap servo work? Can you direct air to the floor or screen?

What happens when you rotate the fan speed control knob. Does the HEVAC show a changing length bar across the top?

You might have a problem with the blower motors (check RL6 and RL7 in the underbonnet fusebox. it is very common for these to fail.)

Have you read: Fuse Box Repairs

thanks P38arover. I'm new to this site and still working my way around it. Thanks for your offer also on the auto. Shame you are in NSW. I have often thought of driving my P38 to Sims Metal but just cant bring myself to parting with it. I actually work in the USA ( just bought a new RR Sport SC here ) I get back to Melbourne every 2 months and seems somethiong esle has gone wrong with it. i will look into the suggestions you made and keep you posted. thanks again

I forgot to answer your post in full. I will have someone check the flow to the screen and floor. The problem started when I was back over Christmas. First thing I noticed was that the outside temperature gauge was acting strange. It was very erratic and wasn't showing the correct outside temperature. At about the same time the flow from the vents was very poor and not cooling the car properly. When I parked the car and restarted it seemed to work fine again for a little while. This happened on and off for a few days when finally I couldn't get it to work properly at all. Not sure if this helps

Hmmm. I think a diagnostic check of the car is in order. HEVAC faults are logged. I don't suppose you noticed if the (cheque)book symbol appears on the HEVAC screen at any time?

Unfortunately, the chequebook comes up with a number of faults. One problem which will give low airflow and the book symbol is a loose connector on the blower motor, especially early models. I don't know if the problem was fixed by '97.

Here's a post I made on the RR Net forum:

I assume you have a chequebook symbol on the HEVAC screen.

I wonder if the connections to the motor are bad as referenced in a TSB. Mine used to fail with fault code until I did the TSB fix shown below. After the description I've added a few pix of mine.

See TSB Bulletin No : 0008
    CDS. ref: L8490bu
    Issue: 1
    Date: 20.01.99

    AFFECTED RANGE:
All vehicles with Automatic Temperature Control (ATC)

    PROBLEM:
INTERMITTENT OPERATION OF THE HEATER BLOWER
The customer will complain that one of the heater blowers is not working and/or that the handbook symbol is illuminated on the ATC message display.

    CAUSE:
Poor electrical connection to the inoperative blower motor.
NOTE:If the fault is intermittent and rectifies itself, the message will remain on the ATC display and the blower will not work until the ignition has been turned off and on.

    ACTION:
Interrogate the ATC system using TestBook. If the fault is as described above, TestBook will advise that the blower motor is faulty.
Prior to changing a blower motor, refer to the following to ensure that the harness connection to the blower motor is secure.

    1. Behind the fascia closing panel on the drivers side or the glove box inner on the passenger side, locate the single wire connector to the inoperative blower motor, connector C206 for the LH motor and connector C239 for the RH motor. Refer to Electrical Troubleshooting Manual (ETM) Section Z3, location views 73 and 257, ( NOTE: a LHD vehicle is shown in the ETM).

    2. Separate the connector and remove the outer plastic casing. ( Do not assume that because the plastic casing is securely latched, that there is good electrical contact).

    3. Compress the female terminal to obtain a secure fit to the male terminal.

    4. Reassemble connector.

    End

These pics show the connector to the right blower motor. The black plastic part can be quite firm but still allow the Lucar connector to be loose.

That's why you need to release the cover to get to the metal contacts.

I'm sorry I can't remember how to release the cover but it probably involves the use of a jeweller's screwdriver to lift a tab whilst pulling on the wire lead to get the connector out of the plastic housing.

Definitely have a look at the Air Filters as well... The Pollen Filters get clogged up very easily and if not change you get a "lack of airflow" very easily also...

A 5 minute job to check and change yourself.

"I have often thought of driving my P38 to Sims Metal"

Now don't go doing that, I could always recycle it... If you end up feeling like going to scrappers PM me on here first!!!

Seriously though, give AMV a call and mention this site and the good report... I'm pretty sure they like referrals and understand this is a good place to maintain a decent reputation.
