    Won't rise to the occasion

Been a while since I've been here, so hello all.
The P38 has been having a well deserved rest, but has now been pressed back into service.
Latest quirk is that it will not rise from rest. I recently replaced the pump seal and this has worked well for over a year. Currently the system recognises it needs to raise, but the pump doesn't switch on - does this sound familiar? I haven't started testing as I figure I'd pitch the problem out here first in case it's a common issue (and an easy fix!!!).

    Regards,

    Jonathan

Makes you start the day feeling a little flat doesn't it?

Yes it does sound like the pump, perhaps an after market replacement is the way to go.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

    Sounds like a power issue.
    Check your connectors and fuse.
If you have a multi meter you can check the power cable going to the compressor and see if it is getting power directly to the compressor.
You can run a jumper wire(s) to the compressor if you are stuck so that you can get to a work shop.

    Or
Do you have an "EAS FAULT" showing in the message center?
If this is YES you will need to get some diagnostic gear onto it to clear the fault or she no go buddy.

There's no such thing as a simple "silver bullet" fix. Take 20 mins and using the free software and a DIY cable do the testing. The old saying that "the long way around is often the quickest way home" is very true when applying TLC to a P38 though not when DRIVING a P38

No point paying good $$$ for a pump if it's a dud pressure switch or thermal cut out switch for example. Have you tested them? Done the soapy water test on the valve block to see whether the diaphragm is leaking?

    do the tests!!!

If you have not got the EAS software and lead get it ASAP.
The pump should run if you remove the pump relay from the main fuse box and run a bridge between the 2 terminals nearest the front and back of the car. -. It will run unless dead. If it does not run check the plug to the pump, mine has arced and burnt the terminals in the past giving a bad connection. If the pump runs via bypass but not normally I would investigate the thermal cut out within the pump and the pressure switch
The thermal cut out can be over-ridden if faulty. A new one can be had from e-bay.
All diagnostics a clearly written up at rangerovers.net.

Thanks for all your responses. Easy fix was placed in brackets because experience and 5 years ownership have taught me that the old girl is never in a hurry to give up her secrets.

The thing about this that I find odd is that there are no EAS faults on the dash. Tomorrow I'm going to have a good look. I have an EAS lead, but my old laptop crapped it and I haven't a com port on my current laptop.

In the short term I can remove the relay and manually pump through a set of separate valves I installed.

Has anyone modded their ride height system?

You said the pump does not run. Surely here is the problem. Find out why it wont run.
What lights are illuminated on the height switch?

Im having pretty much the same issue but I can get it to rise eventually by bridging the relay. But it always ends up with the problem again...

(also, ive had my compressor replaced since the issue started and it hasnt helped)

See my post here: EAS Buddy

Let me know if you solve it...

    Thanks
    Aaron

I would keep hold of the old compressor as its obviously good when it operates.
Check the thermal cut out is not blown. You can get by the thermal cut out if needed or replace it quite easily.
