    TRACTION CONTROL

    Question: is it possible to exchange a 2 wheel traction control to a later 4 wheel version in a 96 P38?? If so, how hard is it to do?

    Yes buy a '99 + model P38. By far the easyiest way

    95-99 Rear TC 99 on 4 wheel TC

    I have cut and pasted this from my w/shop manual.
    Note the ECU has different connectors.

    The ABS system on vehicles up to 99MY uses a ’C’ series ABS ECU which includes an optional two wheel electronic traction control feature. The ECU has a single connector and is located on the bulkhead behind the glovebox.

    On vehicles from 99MY a ’D’ series ABS ECU is used. The ’D’ series ECU features four wheel electronic traction control which is a standard feature on all models. The ECU has three connectors and is located in the same position as the ’C’ series ECU.

    it is possible depending on your wallet size, better option is to get difflocks, it will probably end up being cheaper.

    Im not so sure about diff locks.
    After reading some of the posts on the forum and overseas diff locks seem to be pretty expensive and there is a bit of a reliability issue with them it seems.
    OK if you are going seriously of the beaten track but for most weekend drivers i cant see that you need them.
    Is a limited slip diff a better option?
    I find i run out of ground clearance before i loose traction 95% on the time.

    Yes, i must admit i have that issue as well with ground clearance. It's not an urgent upgrade, but was just seeing if it's viable.

    run bigger tires, i run 32's on mine and have quite a lot of clearance. and when that fails use more throttle.

    I have found the bigger tyres to be of aid also. Mine's a '99 P38 so when the 4 wheel traction control fails to keep me rolling I go back and try a tad quicker! I must say though, compared to H/T's of 29" diameter my current 30.5" M/T's might seem like an unfair comparison. But it means I can tackle washed out hills in 1st low instead of 2nd low and have less of a bumpy ride to get to the top, and is much easier on the car.

    I'm still getting lockers though!

    Not sure about diff locks. At the end of the day something has to give or you break something. Normally tyres will slip, if they don't do you burn out the clutch or brake something in your locked diff.

    I suppose lockers come down to the user really! If you use your lockers only when needed and turn them off as soon as you can your unlikely to be breaking anything. They also mean you don't need to drive the car as hard so the chance of breaking something because of that is reduced.
