Hi RR P38
Sounds like you had a great trip & got to enjoy some fantastic scenery. Must have just about driven past my front door. I'm about 30kms east of Portland on the Prince's Hwy
Gary
Ok after thinking i was heading down the coast from Sydney to any where on the south coast i have just turned around in Victor harbour.
Made a B line for Bermagui then Cann river, Orbost upto Walhalla, Toomban, Aberfeldy into the Baw Baw National park (great trails here) Traralgon and then off to Melbourne for a day or two rest.
Average fuel consumption so far 14.3L/100km.
On to Geelong then Bells beach and along the Great Ocean rd 12 Apostles Thunder cave and all that stuff.
Port Campbell, Portland, Mount Gambier, Millicent, Kingston, Detour to the Granites, Tailem bend across the ferry at Wellington and on to Strathalbyn and finally Victor harbour.
Average fuel consumption 14.8L/100km
Right it is home time.
First stop Hay not hanging around its a straight trip home no traffic at all here speed limit is 110k we can sit on 120k with the occasional run upto 130-140k.
Average fuel consumption over 700km 12.95L/100km WOW im impressed with this i expected it to run out more than that at such high speeds.
Im filling the tank too the top to get these figures but they work pretty well with the trip computer.
OK its back on the road![]()

Yep...figures sound about right. There is a bit of a paradox in that at 120kmh the vehicle does seem to be more efficient than at 100kmh. But if you idle along at 80 kmh the consumption figures can improve amazingly...but who wants to do that?
The prevailing westerly winds on the Hay plains can assist also!!
Hi Gary,
One of the reasons i wanted to head through your way was that i have worked for many years off the coast of Port Campbell and we were based in Portland i love i down your way.
Trip home from Victor Harbour to Sydney and i cant believe this 11.8L/100km
That was over 1573km with a few diversions here and there my average speed by GPS was 114km/hr for a good portion of the way.
I pushed the old girl along pretty hard on the way home after owning her for 11 years and 200,000k in her she still impresses me.
I think the economy definitely improves at 120km/hr
What engine have you got in yours? If it's the 4.6Lt, then that's amazingly economical. Was your vehicle heavily loaded? or kept light?
I'm going to Birdsville on the 27th Aug, it's the Rangies first real long trip, so i'm interested to know fuel economy figures from everyone. I've been experimenting with different fuels to see if there's any difference, and i know we've touched on this subject before, but would be keen to hear again what others have to say.
I've been running my 4.6lt on premium 95 octane unleaded recently and found a noticable difference in engine smoothness, response and slight power increase. Though haven't seen much difference in fuel economy at this stage. Kinda strange considering i've got the low compression motor. I have found in the past running on E10 95 that it drank the fuel like there was no tomorrow and might have been the cause for my fuel pump demise.
To be honest im flabbergasted at my economy on this trip!
Most of the time the outside air temp was well below 10c, i think these engines like it cold.
Engine is 4.6L with 200,000k on it. I was 2 up with Camping gear and some RC hobby gear, tools and some recovery gear. I would say 150kg worth of gear.
I run stock tire size.
I had my RR on a dyno about 6-7 moths ago it was brought up from 90Kw to 96Kw at the wheels after the tune.I have an early 95 so dont have the O2 sensors.
Around town my economy is crap 21-23L/100km
I ran a full bottle of Nulon injector cleaner through in 1 tank on my way South.
95% of the time i run the United ethanol blend 95 octane.
Stop start kills the economy and off road.
When these engines run around 2500-2700rpm in top gear they pull up any hill in top gear locked up.
If you are happy to keep it rolling at 120km/hr or a bit more it seems this is where the economy is to be found on a trip.
I have wondered for a while about that too! I read my trip computer on a highway blast one day - 100km/h got me an average of about 12l/100km. 110km/h too it up to about 13.1l/100km. 120km/h dropped back down to 12l/100km.
Keep in mind that my tyres are 255/70/16 muddies and not the standard 255/65/16 highways... GPS reading says my speedo is 100% accurate now!
I will keep this in mind when any highway gets a 110km/h upgrade near Townsville (other than the flinders out west)!
Cheers
Keithy
I also pulled my mirrors in, they are not much use when you are doing 110km/hr and on a long haul.
I have read that they can consume 5% more fuel, i also ensure my RR stays on the high way setting with a kill switch on the EAS ECU.
I had a TD5 D2 which i have sold in favor of the P38, this trip would have cost me more in the TD5 based on the price of diesel and the TD5 is pretty useless when trying to over take Toyotas at 100k.
Hi RR P38
Good to hear some kind words about South west Vic & south east S.A.
As for fuel before I had the P38 ( gone now L322 TD6) drove a Hyundai Santa Fe. Under hard acceloration ? engine ran far smooth on 95 octane fuel. Also went about 50-80km per tank further. Not much difference going to 98. Never tried e10. Always ran P38 on 95. Problem with sitting on 120kmh around loose to may points & then liecnce
