    Lesson learned ... buying tyres

    Following on from this thread I posted in the technical section

    Probably old news, but always buy new tyres 4 at a time.

    I bought 2 new front tyres a couple of weeks ago and have been struggling with odd whining noises ever since.

    The P38 drive train is extremely sensitive to different tread depth even on exactly the same tyres.

    Replaced the older tyres this morning, so all 4 are new and hey presto, all whining noises have gone away.

    If I were you I would be testing my viscous coupling as the noise would most probably be caused by it turning.

    To test it you lift one wheel, usually a front, put the transfer in neutral and try to turn the wheel off the ground it should turn slowly with quite a bit of effort. If it doesn't turn or takes extreme effort then get a new one quick or you are in for heartbreak of the wallet.

    And getting a new one before other damage occurs will likely be still a little like heartbreak of the wallet.

    Happy to report that under the above mentioned test the wheel does in fact turn through 90 degrees with equivalent force to tightening up the wheel nuts.

    Happy to report that under the above mentioned test the wheel does in fact turn through 90 degrees with equivalent force to tightening up the wheel nuts.
    Great news!
    They can make a bit of a noise on cornering , but if it turns it should be OK.

    The equally embarrasing alternative (to fixing the visciou$ coupling) is to remove the front drive shaft...and run as a 2WD...
