Replacing the sound system - integrated with the steering wheel controls

I plan to replace the sound system in my car and want the new one integrated so that I can still use the steering wheel buttons. The main incentive to replace it is to find a unit with an MP3 jack so that I can forget about the cd stacker.

Has anyone done anything similar and if so, what would you advise?

Hi mate, I replaced everything in my Disco from "premium" Hardan Kardon to aftermarket. It isn't a top end setup but leaves the factory HSE sound for dead. The headunit, Kenwood KDC-X8016BT has bluetooth, CD player, Ipod control, USB input and AUX input. Also, especially for you it has an input for a device that allows you to use your factory steering controls.

This is where I bought the stuff from:

    The tuner:

Sound Master Car Audio - ($360) Kenwood KDC-X8016BT Car CD Tuner KDCX8016BT

    The adapter:

Sound Master Car Audio - ($99) Stinger SWI-JACK Steering Wheel Control module SWIJACK

The P38A is a problem but first we need to know which year P38A and which radio. If it's an Alpine, you're in luck. If it's a Clarion - then you are in trouble, there is nothing that will do the job unless you have the radio modified for an Aux input.

Ron, my car is 1997; however, there is no manufacturer's name on the sound system. I've carefully examined the system in the car, no name brand and nothing in the manual to suggest who made it either.

As far as I recall, it is a Harmon Kardon. Does that make sense?

The head unit is either Clarion (pre-99) or Alpine (post-99). Harmon Kardon supplied the door amps and speakers.

    This is my Clarion:

    and this is an Alpine:

He did say replace the sound system with one that would integrate with the steering wheel controls and have an aux input .

I did indicate the existing could be modifed for an aux input.

If it is a Clarion and one can live without the steering wheel controls, then it will still be a hassle owing to the interface to the HK door amps. Been there done that. See Nexxia radio fitting kits for P38A - in particular, page 4 - Nexxia radio fitting kits for P38A

I have a Fusion CA-IP500 iPod radio in mine now. The iPod (I had a couple of spares) sits inside the head unit and is controlled from the HU controls.

I have a 2001 P38 with the Alpine unit that I am hoping to change out, but keep the steering wheel controls.

Hoping to have integrated MP3/iPod and Bluetooth connectivity.

Has anyone got any tips/pics etc for this? Yet to pull it out and have a look, but obviously the stock head unit is not a standard DIN size.
