    Broken recovery point

Had some excellent fun four wheeling yesterday at the Glasshouse Mountains. The P38 performed superbly with two patrols and a pajero. She led the whole way and crawled up steep, rutted hills that others needed a lot of dangerous speed and multiple attempts at.

A note of confirmation about RR recovery points though, and as a way of a caveat, dont bother replying with snipes about what I should and shouldnt have done here, as I am just trying to share some 4wd pics and also a specific note with experience about the breaking strength of our rear recovery point.

The breaking weight is the weight of one white pajero coming up a big hill. It wasnt the gentle snatch that broke it, rather the ensuing tow without using the snatch springiness. Horribly, the big steel D shackle went flying back towards the towed vehicle, missing it thankfully, but not by much. To my greater horror, I (we all) forgot to put the snatch strap damper on it. Thank the FSM, no harm was done to anyone. Obviously, the better spot is in a snatch block insert to the tow bar receiver, or some significantly more sturdy part of the towbar.

that loops not a recovery point, its a tie down/flat tow point only intended to be used for securing the vehicle or pulling it up onto a flatbed.

alternatively if it was an aftermarket add on, what was it made from cold forged and welded swiss cheese?

    Agreed.

    It's factory, not aftermarket.

wasnt sure if it was the factory loop or not, there was a sort of loop thingy available for the D1 that was little more than a bit of bar stock hammered flat on the ends, drilled and then bent into a U that bolted on in place of the twin tie down rings on the back of a D1. I had assumed that it might have been one of those if it wasnt the factory loop.

are they on both sides on a 38?

    Tow point.

A reasonable solution is to put the pin in the towbar through the loop of the snatch strap. Always us a damper.
There is only 1 loop at the back and one on the front of the p38a.
The one on the front is very securely mounted to the vehicle.

I'll vouch for the strength of the front one, my green p38 full to the seat edges with water in a fast flowing creek was snatched out at full noise and didn't look like breaking!
