I'll pull the heads off this week and have a look..
I've seen I can get a head overhaul gasket set which comprises a composite head gasket kit, composite inlet manifold gasket, all other gaskets needed & a new head bolt set for $250.

Another concern I had was when I removed the oil filler cap, there seemed to be a build up of sludge which had a lot of grit through it. Just hoping it's not metal.. May just need a bloody good flush..

Do the job right the first time. Without top hat liners any work you put into getting it going will be a temporary fix and sometime in the future it will fail, guaranteed. At least that has been my experience.

Just had my 2001 RR P38 heads off, skimmed and reinstalled. Around 2.5k all up including labour. Head Gask at number 1 cyl failed big time. Decided to check the other head whilst we were in there. Agree it's worth popping the head to look first. All the best with yours.
