P38 Gearbox woes? Sound file attached

    Hey all,

My P38 has developed a gearbox noise that has been increasing over time and is now loud enough to record it and post it here for feedback.

The sound file attached makes it sound a worse than it is, it's a lot less audible usually, sometimes up and down. However, it's clear there's something that needs attention. This was recorded in park with my iphone held near the gear stick.

    Some background:
This might be related - After an engine rebuild and a reconditioned transfer case, I've had an ongoing intermittent power loss issue where power drops and almost stalls for a about 30 seconds and then comes back up to about 70% power for a few days. This typically happens if i've been driving for a while, park the car for 5-10 mins and drive off again.

    Questions:
    1. Anyone had something similar to this transmission noise/power loss issue and know what it is?
    2. Any recommendations on good transmission specialists in Sydney? ( I usually use Graeme Cooper or Peter Davis but would like to explore specialist options too.)

    Thanks guys,

    Dave

I assume that because it happens in Park, the noise is engine speed related, not road speed related.

If that's the case, my thought would be a noisy transmission oil pump.

Are you 100% certain it's the gearbox? Is the noise audible from the engine bay too? Maybe drop off the serpentine belt & recheck.

    Thanks guys,

The sound is the same in Park or while driving. It's definitely coming from the gearbox area but hard to say where.

Worth trying the with serpentine belt off though i suppose. Have never done this before - easy or hard?

Just put a ring spanner on the tensioner & move it to slacken off the belt.

It's the easiest drive belt I've ever needed to change.

Remember ... with the belt off, you have NO water pump ..... run the motor for less than a minute, or you will cook it ...
