Yep, not to be confused with the TD5 used on Disco 2's and Defenders.
The DSE P38's were never officially exported to Oz by LR, although at least one was privately imported. Think it is still getting around Melbourne.
Cheers, Paul.
Hi
Did they put six cyl BMW's into the P38?
I thought they were only 5 cyl?

Hey Paul,
Thanks for the reply.
Any idea which is the better engine?
What sort of fuel economy and power does the six have?
Would this be a better engine conversation than the TD5?
Thanks for your input.

there is a post somewhere on this issue "Search"
My recollection of the content is that using a TD5 in this application would not be worth the effort even if it could be done economically (which is doubtful). A 2.5L straight 6 BMW as per the UK version however might be ... but you would probably need to swap out the petrol BECM (AFAIK) for one which accommodates the diesel ECU....
There was some chatter on the rangerovers.net quite a while ago re. the use of a 3L straight 6 BMW diesel (AKA X5).... am not sure if it ever got off the ground but it was certainly a tempting read!
From what I have read the DSE P38 2.5 bmw diesel weren't over endowed with power. Bit of a slug but could be improved greatly with a tune.
Std : 100 Kw @ 4400 & 270 Nm @ 2000 rpm
Then there is this if you have lots of money. TDV6 into P38

Why not just go for the 3 litre BMW six out of a BMW or RR L322??
Or get a cheap TDV6 from the UK.
