Torn Air Spring and Arnott's Gen III Pics

    Hey lads and lasses,

Just a few pics of the torn air spring and a couple of the Gen III's vs OEM springs. The white-ish substance on the torn bag is the residue from 100mph tape used to attempt a running repair.

Tools needed to change the airbags:

    Pliers
    Large screw driver
    13mm spanner
Pry bar (in my case a 36mm spanner)
    Two bottle jacks

I did it in my driveway, easy job, 5 1/2hrs (including a cuppa and bump stop replacement). Can be done in the bush very easily if needed.

    Cheers
    Keithy

most interested in your observations in the change in ride comfort +/-

Am wondering if at standard height there is any improvement in the absorption of minor bumps ...like those experienced with broken bitumen... the standard bags appear to have no variable rate at all ... every little pavement imperfection is transmitted through the body of the vehicle... there must be a way to improve upon this

I would be interested in this too.

I was looking at fitting a set of Gen IIs for this reason as they're supposed to ride softer than the Gen IIIs.

Then I wandered over to the D2 section & read the Arnotts air bag horror stories....

They do as the claims on the website state, firmer (but not harsher) in highway height, they feel softer with slightly more body roll in standard height, and they are indeed softer in wading/high setting off road!

Dodgy bitumen patch-ups were never too bad in mine, they seem to ride soft and silently over them now.

    Nice pics Keithy.

I think we should be considering the chassis->body rubbers for this harshness problem, I find it too. Servicing probably changed at least some of our suspension bushing over the first ~12 years of P38 life, but I doubt the body ones get changed. I felt my front ones last weekend and they still felt pliable, but I cant compare them to the original ones. I cant imagine the P38s were harsh when they rolled out of the factory!? Anyone know of a supplier for the body mount rubbers?

Have priced body bush kit from UK. 1 or 2 inch lift avail also. Apparently, 1 inch requires no mod's as there is enough stretch in everything STD. Thats all still to be proven though. Kits were around $100 landed.

Depending on the material used, 1" lift might provide just enough extra cushioning to absorb most of the harsh vibration... am wondering how one might get the separation done between body and chassis sufficient to remove /replace all 8 (I think) bushes... there goes another weekend!

I thought body lifts were illegal if you have srs airbag equipped vehicles?
