I have found a Camshaft sensor for a little less than the $400 that you were not so eager to pay.
Should be able to get it to Aussie for less than $100.

Camshaft angle sensor
Hi , that link is for a crankshaft angle sensor, not camshaft. Thank anyway, any help is appreciated always. I have obtained one from Island 4x4 Kent , which was delivered after 24 days:mad: with 30gbp freight :mad:for a 350 gram part. Still querying freight .
Also got a used one for 25gbp with 12gbp freight and was here in 6 days.

That one above is DISCO 3 & L322! Not 2, the CAM sensor is ERR6169 (also suits P38 4.0 & 4.6).
$470- from one supplier, not available but $400- + from another.

I just replaced mine. You can do it without removing the harmonic balancer. Getting the plug apart is the hardest part, then getting the plug off the bracket. Putting it back in is hard as there's only about 2mm difference between the length of the sensor and the space between the timing cover and pulley.

Is your sons car on LPG by chance?
I'm still a bit confused as to why it wont start, GEMS will run without a camshaft sensor - or an airflow sensor for that matter too. Mine's been like it for the past 10 years.
Also the plug for the camshaft sensor gets filled with oil too; well it did on mine, but it has a complete use lubrication system at the moment..

cam
No, my sons car is on petrol.
Island 4x4 Kent supplied a cam angle sensor for au$315.08 delivered which was the cheapest I could find anywhere.
The crank angle sensor and the flywheel were also replaced and the car is now running very smoothly.
Thanks to all for advice.

Well after having mine at the panel beaters and replacing the cam sensor (known 60,000km 2nd hand unit) while the front end was apart I've gone from having an intermittent fault, static timing & massive pinging to a persistant fault, dynamic timing and no pinging plus same fuel consumption. MAF was also canged with a brand new genine unit.
I really don't want to shell out $400- for a new unit and even less want to rip the front end apart to replace it again.
