Cam angle sensor for gems 4.6

Does anyone know where I might obtain one of these sensors for a reasonable price . A/B list them at $399.95 plus freight. Ouch. It's for a '96 gems 4.6 with the vin pre the 34.......... number.

Do you mean a cranck angle sensor? How do you know you need a new one?

I have a used Gems CAS in good order sitting in storage if you want to use it to test against your curent one for troubleshooting. Or you could even use it until you can hunt one down on ebay UK or from someone local for a decent price.

Happy to express post to you... PM me if you want?

Dave, there is a crank angle sensor in the lower LHS of the block and a cam sensor in timing case.

    cam angle sensor

The vehicle is my son's and it has had a scanner used on it which said the cam angle sensor has failed. The scan was done by an auto electrican . The vehicle won't run and a search of usual parts suppliers doesn.t turn up many options.

For some reason I know not what, the cam sesnor is a lot more expensive than the crankshaft sensor... the A-B price is about the same as that from the UK...
    see Range Rover P38A--Electrical

Then again, the cost is equivalent to about 3 full tanks of petrol! So he's saved that already by staying put!

i don't think the cam sensor fault will stop it starting. i think it brings the mil light on and runs crap.

It will stop it from starting if it is a dead open circuit or produces excessive electrical 'noise'.

when the cam angle sensor fails the ecu uses a static 15 degrees for the timing. this will not stop it running. it will however use more fuel and be down on power. if the crank sensor fails it will run off the cam sensor. if they both fail u are stuffed. for a stop gap measure give triumph rover spares a ring and get a second hand one.

You may need to take into account intermittent problems that do not appear on the diagnostics - did the AE check fuel pump etc?

If not, First step, check the basics such as fuel
Delivery, spark etc before moving to sensors.
