    Central locking etc

Morning all, I am currently using the key to lock and unlock the door of my P38 (which is a bugger in the rain) because the previous owner lost the fob and rather than spend a fortune on a replacement, I was thinking of going aftermarket.

I was planning on using an aftermarket control such as you buy from Autobarn to activate the factory solenoids. Now my question is has somebody done this in the past and if so are there any pitfalls or should I just lash out and spend $500 on a new fob not knowing if it will work or not because my message display on the dash says there is an alarm fault?

    Regards and thanks in advance.

Key fobs can often be rebuilt too. Use search function and see what comes up. Also check out 'the good oil' threads for common problems and fixes.

I tried this some time ago by putting the after market kit on the drivers door.
The alarm goes off when you open the door.
So i have stuck with the key in the door trick, yes its a pain in the rain.

My previous 1995 P38 had stuffed key fobs and both the alarm and immobiliser had been disabled.
I fitted an aftermarket central locking system to the car by attaching the new solenoids to the existing one on the driver's door, which in turn operated the other door locks. From memory, one of the other solenoids was stuffed so I attached an aftermarket solenoid to it as well.
No alarm, no immobilser but it all appeared to work to the uneducated observer.
Can be done. Better to fix/replace the original fey fob if you can.
    Cheers, Paul.

Turns out was off L/H drive ( US vehicle ) but managed to fit with some mucking around and reprogamed BECM. End result all works well, best of all all new and remotes work! cost off ebay $195.au delivered

Thanks for the advice, my door handles have suffered the dreaded problem of having to use brute force to open the doors, so this sounds like a great alternative. Was the purchase for new items or second hand items and was it the US Ebay site?

Was it difficult to program the BECM and who did it for you?
    Regards
    David
