    Melted Coil Pack

My wife experienced a burning smell, followed by my P38 dying next to the road. My local service centre reported the problem to be a melted coil pack. They were unable to provide a cause though. They had replaced my alternator about a week prior, but with a different brand 100A unit. Any ideas on the what the cause might have been, or similar experience?

A wiring short circuit or a failed ECU could cause a full 14V across a coil pack, leading to quick destruction. It depends on how long it was running roughly before it stopped as to how much heat was generated in the melted coil.
