    P38 Electrical weird stuff- does it ever end?

    Hi Fellas,

    Heres a possible new one?
    The truck still goes great, never stops......
    But there is a nasty little Grommet that shuts down the Blower fans, AC console display, passenger side front Window, half the indicators, displays Fuse Failure on F9 and F12 I think???.

    Pull over, with the engine still going fine, shut her down for a minute or two and it all comes alive again..... OK, so it's not like me on a night out but possibly just as weird.

    Where this one has thrown me is that I can't emulate the fault.
    Pull all of the relays, check all the fuses, keep scratching head! No luck but prenty splinters.

    When the fault recovers, it clears itself from the dash and everything functions as if the problem had never occurred?????

    Gentlemen, suggestions please...

    My immediate reaction is intermittent faulty earth point, or perhaps cracked circuit board in the fuse box or faulty relays.. do any of the yellow relays have brown marks on them? It's a sign of overheating and they may need to be replaced... this is a particular issue with relays which feed the fans....

    My guess, like Hoges would also be a faulty earth.

    Try earths for a really flukey fix, but i doubt it. If your lucky it will be burnt and dodgy relays.

    The actual boards knackered if you are unlucky. Don't mean to mozz you, but from your description, that's the one I am tipping.

    I'd be testing or replacing all the relays for a start, they can cause all sorts of strange goings on when they start to fail.
    They are interchangeable, yellow for yellow, green for green, maybe try swapping suspect ones for non vital system ones (like a/c or fan relay) and see what happens.
    The diagram is inside the fuse box lid to show which relay does what.
    As DT-P38 said, it may be the relay/fuse box circuit board, which would explain intermittent weirdness.
    You can buy a new relay fuse box like this:

    What the other guys said, plus...
    Reboot the BeCM and other ECU's by disconnecting the battery for a couple of minutes. Used to work on my old 1995 P38 when it started doing weird electrical stuff every few months.

    Remember to leave a door open and have the key in your pocket when you do this just in case it decides to lock itself when you reconnect the battery.

    You will also need to re-set windows, sunroof, seat memories and perhaps radio.

    Did it all except the earthing..

    Now we do diving for the earth pints! Oh what fun, hey?
    New Fuse box, new relays all done last year but the earth points for this circuit have been avoided due to them being well hidden.....

    I had more faults flag up on the message screen than I care to remember when I got my P38. I sent the BECM, engine ECU and the keys to Mark from Autocode in Perth, he repaired / unlocked it all and all's been great since.

    I had ABS faults, TC fault, fuse faults, EAS faults, you name it. Best $500 I ever spent.
