    Confusing brake problem.

The past few days the brake pedal has gone down half an inch more than usuall before it takes up, then today if I were to put on the brakes, then ease the pedal off half an inch then push the pedal down again there was nothing there for another three inches, I could then back off half an inch, and it'd go down another 3 inches.

The accumulator / motor pumps up as normal (not abnormally long, and no air bubbles), and when the pedal goes down the three or so inches there's power assistance there.

I did notice with the ignition on and the bonnet open, when I pushed the brake pedal hard I could hear a squeeking noise, mmm.

    It's the two wheel TC.

Just to make sure the pump is pumping, and not just making the right noises, does the level go dow in the reservoir when it pumps?

Just checked, yes the fluid level drops as per normal, and settles just below the max line.

We've just got back from town again, it's 43 here today, so a tad warm. As we've got a 3 month old we were idling around for 15 minutes so it got pretty warm under there (water temp was 103c). On the way into town it was fine - on the way back it started again. So it has me thinking wether there is water boiling in the fluid, or the accumulators are effected by heat as they get older - it is almost due for replacement.

Disconnect the brake fluid supply line to the ABS motor and check if there is any brake fluid running to the ABS motor. If there isn't then blow back into the filter in the brake fluid reservoir to unblock the brake fluid filter. If this allows the fluid to run then close the system up, bleed air out of the brake accumulator, pressure switch and a the supply line at the ABS module on the firewall and all should be good. If this is indeed the problem then at some stage it is advisable to clean out the brake fluid reservoir and the filter inside it.

Thanks so much for that. I'll do that on Wednesday... when it's cooler, and i'll flush it with fresh fluid whilst i'm at it. Would anyone know how many litres are in the system?
