Several points: The manual (Owner's Hnadbook) specifies a range of viscosities dependent on ambient temperature ... e.g. from 5W-30W in very cold climates to 10W-60W in warm climates

Further: are you losing oil because of leaks or because the engine is burning it? I was going through a heap of oil and discovered it leaking from the sump bolts which were adjacent ot the cross bolts. I removed/replaced the sump using a 'rubber' gasket and putting Loctite thread sealer on all the bolts. Problem solved.

I currently use either 10W-40W Magnatec of 15W-40 Magnatec diesel in my 4.6. given that it's an "old" design engine. My personal view is that 10W-60W is too high.

This is a topic bound to stir all sorts of emotions I try and stay away from full synthetics because of the flat tappet design. If the vehicle had roller rockers, I'd use synthetics.

I have been running Burson 20-50 with no problems. I use an engine flush and find that the oil stays cleaner afterwards.
My rangie has 278000 up and uses a little oil, but not much. Its always better when the oil is fresh using very little.
Cheap maintainance, regular oil and filter change.

No issues whatsoever. In fact, it seems to run a lot smoother.

I'm running Valvoline Syn Power 5w 40 in mine, have for the 2 and a half years I've owned it. Zero oil consumption, zero oil leaks and no tappet noise whatsoever.

I use Caltex Delo 400 in my Rangie (3.9, but for oiling purposes the same as a 4.6). While technically a diesel engine oil it is fine for petrol engines and has high zinc levels as required by flat tappet cammed engines.

My preference is for a single origin, cold pressed olive oil.

I'm not overly fond of the peppery ones, although they can be very nice with the right food.

Definitely has to be local, the imported stuff is well oxidised by the time it arrives here and is usually rancid

Yeah I found that too. A lot quieter & smoother. Just as we'll, cause I just bought a 20 lt barrel of the HPR 15.

I've got a very slow leak near the timing cover, which at the moment is not a huge concern.

The timing cover oil seal is reasonably straightforward to replace. There is some discussion on this elsewhere on this forum. Don't let it go too long without attending to it.
