    Steering Wheel Covers ?

    Hi All

The black insulating tape on my leather steering wheel keeps melting in Melbs hot summer sun and is seriously ****ing me off . Can anyone recommend a place where I can purchase a new leather steering wheel cover to either stitch myself or have done. I rang one place in SE suburbs and they wanted $350 to replace existing one. Phew !!!

Any comments or suggestions much appreciated

    Kind Regards

    Hi Bruce,

I got a nice leather cover for my Defender from:

    eBay My World - customsteering

Less than 20 pounds sterling ( approx $30) delivered to Perth. The finished job is a little baggy at the top as the steering wheel is badly sun bleached. I later learnt that if you put the leather cover on wet, it shrinks to fit better. Lacing took about 1.5 hours not easy as the old eye sight is not that good close up, & black thread on a black cover in a not too bright shed proved a challenge.
    Cheers Nigel

I got one off e-bay, genuine leather, largest size on offer, about $10 in light beige to match the interior.
I ended up enlarging all the sewing holes to get a thick needle through and using a much stronger twine than supplied. Probable took best part of 5 hours as is was on and off twice before I got it stitched up real tight with the edges meeting. Very happy with the end result but would probable take the wheel off if I was to do another.

Heres a link, get the biggest size, its an effort but worth the end result plus the needle and cord supplied is not strong enough to stretch it over our wheel. Get better cord and thick strong needles

Yep, thanks Martin. I have 3 of the grey leather wheels left on the eBay store. One is up for auction for the next 7 days starting at $200, the other 2 are set at $500. These were the last of LR Aust's stock when I bought them in 2011.
They are suitable for pre-99 models only unless you feel like transplanting the ICE/CC board and controls across to the new wheel... which is what I am doing with the very last wood/leather steering wheel that I have
They will be gone within two weeks regardless of whether I sell them on eBay or not. Final day of trading for Hard Range is Sun 10-March-2013... don't ask for time... whenever I wake up and feel like it unless I get distracted by something shiny
    Cheers, Paul.
