not sure about the GEMS, but I got a proper LR rubber gasket for my Thor. Don't know why they would be different.
Even with the rubber gasket, I used a bead of grey Permatex to seal it.
Can anyone confirm wether or not the Gems 4.6 should have proper gasket on sump or just red silicone as seal.
Have very slight leak & before I take it off to remedy I want to be 100% as to how it should be done properly. Have been told just to use red gasket silicone which I have, but would have thought gasket would be better!
Hopefully someone has tackled this before & knows best solution.

The alloy sumps may or may not have a rubber gasket.
My steel sump GEMS has a cardboard (?) gasket.

GEMS should have Sealant only, THOR has rubber gasket and is very important that it is fitted!

I've never seen an alloy sump on a GEMS engine but the US seemed to get them.
When I've bought P38A gasket sets, they have always included a fibre sump gasket even though the manual shows no gasket being fitted.

All the steel sumps on all LR products can be/ usually are/ prefferred to be/ glued on. All Alloy ones are fitted with rubber gaskets that include special height steel spacers as not only do they prevent crushing but they also determine the clearance required to line up the holes that the bellhousing lower section bolts to. The alloy sump design is great as the whole engine and trans assembly ends up stiffer and unified.

I've been using Loctite 518 Master Gasket - the sumps never leak!
It might now have a new name with the 518 number.

Questioning now wether to put a sump gasket on or not. The steel sump has a ridge in the middle of the contact area with the block, and im wondering if the alloy sump is the same.
I'm a little loathe to use silicon at the moment, have spent the last 4 days cleaning that forsaken stuff out. How it ended up on the cam journals God only knows.
Benji, using THE RIGHT sealant is paramount. Wurth250 is what we use for sumps, it has NEVER been seen in any oil pickups etc so far
If using a gasket, Rons idea of Loctite master gasket would be good, but don't tighten too much or gasket will tear.

I have the Alloy sump on my GEMS. It has a rubber gasket, and has never leaked a drop, well from the sump at least.
The oil drain is in a much better position.
