    diesel into P38

    hello people,

I know the the subject of putting an oil burner into a P38a has come up before, and I expect to get a great big negative response, but fuel hit $1.65 for discount petrol here today so I have been doing some research

there are some companies in the UK who are putting old school mechanical diesel engines into P38's, I have some friends over there who are happy to phone on my behalf and they have been told the replacement engines still work the original auto box etc.

It seems what they do is leave the engine management computer in the car with a "minimum of sensors", their words not mine, and the gearbox and engine ecu's happily communicate, as long as the engine computer knows whats going on it seems to think it still runs the show.

my question is what exactly would count as "minimum sensors", I have found a few useful bits of info about the gems system, so think an older Rangie might be easier to do.

    for example,

the fuel temperature sensor, if it fails the ecu will log the fault in its memory, assume the fuel is at 40 degrees c and carry on without raising an error message, so that one can go,

I assume it will need a crank position sensor feed, maybe a magnet on the back of a flywheel or even something coming off of the rev counter,

I am also thinking the coolant temperature sensor just stays on, as does the airflow meter,

about now my lack of computer car knowledge comes crashing in and I go from sounding like I have a clue to no idea, if anyone can add anything blatant I've missed please let me know.

I am nowhere near ready to start this as a project but I think the research may take a while so thought I would try to get a jump on it, also if anyone has suggestions on a suitable engine, or indeed good places to shop for a P38 with a slipped liner I would be very grateful to hear them.

this turned out to be my longest ever post.

thanks for even reading to the end

Its going to cost plenty to put a diesel in.
Why not go gas? Injected gas!

I wonder if a 4HP24 and 300TDi would adapt to the P38 transfer box....
After all, they coexisted from '95 to '98.

But yeah, injected gas will cost you far less overall and cost about the same to run (there's still a $1000 LPG rebate).

Did think about going the gas route, only issue was range, especially when towing, 2 50kg dogs need all the boot space they can get. Used to have a Prado on injected gas, great except when towing and ended up using petrol to get back to an lpg filling station, kind of defeated the point of having it.

To be honest the idea of a diesel P38 just sounds like a good one if it can be made to work.

As for importing one, I was under the impression you had to own and use the car for a year before you can bring it into the country.

What engine is one of the big ones, I have a tgv 2.8 300tdi in my disco and that is brilliant, bit expensive though. UK conversions often use a 3.5 mazda engine but I haven't seen them over here, apparently the mitsubishi 2.8 is a bit to deep and the Isuzu 3.1 is not their best work so still looking into that.

The Mazda engine is very common, its in all the Mazda t3500 little trucks you see getting around, good little engine, a bit smoother than the 4bdi. Pretty sure its the same block/engine as in the t4000 (4 litre variant)

I was thinking about the 4jj1 that's in our Dmax! Chipped you can get well over 400nm out of them at very low revs with more power than any P38 was offered with.

Not the quietest or smoothest diesel but certainly has a reputation for being reliable.

    I'd like more info too!
