What about one of those 4M41 engines out of a Pajero.
    3.2 L 4 cyl, OHC etc
You should look into those half cut imports from Japan

All the mechanical ones are indirect injection (i.e. hard starting, fuel chewing boat anchors), all the direct injection ones are electronic commonrail.

Honestly the TD5 makes the most sense all up. Enough power, good efficiency, landrover parts, use close to your original drivetrain etc.

The 4BD1T would be great if you wanted a P38 for a towing animal, but you'll need to upgrade the gearbox.

Toyota/Nissan/Mitsubishi etc don't make anything with any advantages over the TD5 or 4BD1T.

I suspect the engine bay is a little small for a Cummins 6BT, although I am tempted to measure up and see with the P38 and DAF 45 I have in the yard.

A Td5 into a P38 would be interesting to see, I'd look at buying a defender wiring loom to allow a fairly simple setup of the engine as a standalone unit, and attach the few extra sensors needed -as in add them in rather than splice the wiring as you'll end up upsetting something- so as the cars ECU still thinks it's in charge.

The good thing with the defender Td5 loom is that it doesn't have all the extra parts required to keep it happy that are found in the Disco one, and only has the ECU and Alarm box to connect outside of the engine and fuel pump.

Quite doable, although a fair amount of time and probably a bit of money involved doing it.
A sub 100k mile Td5 is usually around the £1k Stirling mark over here, plus another £200 or so for the defender wiring, and anything else you might need.
**** knows what they are out there, but probably still worth a go.

Only thing to consider is that the standard Td5 auto box has the weakest setup of the 4HP22, smallest TC, lockup clutch and internals. They do ok with the standard tune, but start remapping, adding VNT turbos and big intercoolers it might start to complain.

I've also heard the 3 litre BMW six used in the L322 makes a P38 somewhat more peppy, and there's a few been done.

Might even bolt in. The showstopper will be finding someone who knows the electrical side of the commonrail well enough.

Thinking at the moment that the grubb suggestion of a 4BD1T with a 4L60 or AOD auto box onto the P38a transfer case sounds like a plan, my only question would be whether the remaining computers would be ok, how would the immobiliser react, and would the air suspension still be happy to operate error message free?

Any and all knowledge about any of that gratefully received

And if The Grubb or anyone else can tell me how easy they go together.

    Thanks

A phase tap off the alternator would keep the ABS and EAS happy. Uniquilly here you could use the same alternator, as you don't need a vacum source for the brakes.

Been reading up on P38a's and they had the BMW 2.5ltr diesel as alternative donk in them.(bmw M51 turbodiesel I6).

    There's a bloke that put a 3.0ltr BMW diesel in a p38a in the states(3.0 bmw engine into dse p38 - Page 2).

Haven't read thru all of it yet.

    cheers

Sounds like the guy is in the UK. They never had P38 DSE's in Canada/US even though rangerovers.net is a US based website.
This is the same engine Daslandroverman and myself were discussing a few posts above. The first few years of L322 rangerover got the same 3.0 BMW td6.

well it was a balls up .they ended up having to buy the car from me and refund all cash !!
    Not good then.

I also am concerned about the extra torque this engine has going through the ZF HP24. I'd be inclined to take the BMW 6sp manual gearbox across with the engine. Then consider wrapping it in a L322 instead of P38.

French guy put up this photo in the same thread:
