If it's the original driver pack and the resin backing is looking like a block of seriously heat-shocked chocolate then it's a fair chance it's reached its use-by date... you can get all sorts of spurious results and the system becomes a nightmare to calibrate.
A couple of yrs ago, I found the cheapest was from this mob: Electrical | Range Rover P38A | British Parts UK ...depending on the exchange rate. At least it can be a point of comparison....current FX =A$363 plus freight to Aus. A price list for one local parts place has it at $544
Have also pondered the wisdom of manufacturing a DIY harness extension and siting it away from the dreaded heat under bonnet.
