Pretty much all LRV8 starter motors are interchangeable. The 3.9 one will be fine. Water may or may not be the cause of death. There are new aftermarket starters on ebay for under $200 posted to your door too.
2000 build 4.0l GEMS starter motor appears to have just stopped. Filled up with petrol, no hesitation in starting. Pulled up in a friends driveway and nothing but the solenoid clicking hard.
I hooked a jump start lead from the positive on the battery to the big connection with the nut on the solenoid. Turned ignition over and nothing but a loud solenoid click.
So does it look like a new or reconditioned starter motor for me?
My dad has a brand spanking new starter for his 94 classic 3.9l. I have read these are the same?
I did wash and detail it yesterday so maybe it's in shock?

Cant say I have ever had a problem with a P38 starter motor.
Pull it out and do a bench test on it, its pretty easy to get at.
I doubt an Auto electrician will charge much to re brush it.
Or as bee uty says get one delivered.....pretty cheap in the scheme of things.
I imagine theyre a high torque geared one. I recently got a Jackaroo done for $180.
Thanks. Starter changed and good to go again. Will look at fixing the old one so I have a spare. 250 bucks for the Bosch one my old man had spare.
That top bolt ain't easy.
I pulled my starter motor out to do the welch plugs prior to the cape trip (well Brian did), made a massive extension with a cut-off Allen key to get it!
Have to admit, when I had the exhaust and sump of, I put antisieze on the starter bolts. Inthe past I've resorted to pouring boiling water down a tubeto heat up that top bolt to get it undone.
All good then.
Pretty cheap really.
I just looked up the price of a starter on the L322 V8, around $1000![]()
Yeh I thought that was quite reasonable for a genuine Bosch replacement. The UK get em even cheaper I believe.
$1000.... That's nuts. But I guess you pay for the pure experience of owning one ha ha.
I looked at the L322 instead of the P38 but figured I'd be too stingy to bash one of them round in the bush. Didn't realise starter motors were that much.
