I have thought ever since I saw the subwoofer in the P38 that having that stupid grill outlet being the only way the bass can get out was dumb.
It's like LR got a great sound system designed and fitted, the the car radio guys came along and said, "this subwoofer needs a nice grill"
I am currently fitting a dual battery system and I have removed the rear passenger side panel.
Today I was out and Fat Freddies Drop came on, and I went WTF, listen to that pumping bass !!
So my surmise that the subwoofer is strangled by the "grill" seems to be pretty accurate!

It's not so much an issue with the door speakers.
Without going into the physics of it, subwoofers are all about moving lots of air. The lower the frequency, the more air you need to shift, hence the 15" subs you see in the "doofmobiles".
I am definitely going to try one of those Kenwood powered subwoofers in the New Year!

I ended up buying an Infinity Basslink sub that fits in nicely behind the wheel arch. Looked at those compact under the seat style ones. Great for space saving, but I decided for something a little less compact (but still compact comparatively to other types of subs), but with a little more punch. I bought some decent 6.5" splits for the front so wanted something to fill their lows in nicely.

I only had the poverty pack model though so standard was pretty average. Sounding much better with decent speakers and new head unit. I only had a tape deck because the poverty pack had the stacker and sub removed.

I would think that simply enlarging the vent by extending it would improve the performance of the factor unit.

I left them in place but didn't connect them up. Thought it would upset the frequency response, particularly in the mid range.

Doesn't work like that... It's a 'ported' subwoofer. The hole is simply there to let air escape so the speaker doesn't pop out.
The performance of the sub actually comes down to the size and spec of the speaker, and then the volume of air it has to work with.
'Sealed' sub boxes are actually much better quality bass (IMO) than the ported boxes; but involves a calculated size box/air volume to suit the speaker to ensure that it doesn't blow itself open as above.

The subwoofer enclosure itself is a ported enclosure you can see it is sealed with a small port near the top. The port is not there to stop the speaker popping out. It is a Helmholtz resonator with the port being tuned to produce the optimum response from the particular speaker using it's Thiele Small parameters.
There is masses of info on sealed v ported enclosures on the net of course.
The problem with the RR setup is the air output is limited by the small holes in the grill. A good analogy would be if you had say a 100mm water pipe but the outlet was only 25mm, a considerable reduction in flow would result.
No doubt LR have tuned for this, but it still means a lot of energy is wasted vibrating the panels in the rear enclosure area rather than the air in the cabin
