What if the p38 had 25 years of development...?

Was just talking to my brother and we were thinking that the Classic had 25 years of development, and ended up a very different beast from conception. But the p38 only having 10 ended up much the same - just a bit more reliable and refined.

If it did have an extra 15 years what sort of changes would have been made I wonder?

I'd like to think 32valve with stepped liners - maybe even wet sleeve, and a5 speed auto.

Depends who owned it at the time.
If BMW owned it, it could have some dribbling good engines, both petrol and diesel and some reliability. If Dong Feng owned it, they would all be painted blue.

True, it may have got the 3lt six in the early l322 - that would be a good combination too.

BMW were also toying with the idea of the v12 (there were some pics floating around the web). Not so good for the climate but the torque output would have been awesome!

A completely reliable P38 with decent fuel consumption, I would have waited 15 more years for that!

    Oh to dream...
A long wheelbase version to cope with proper limo duties and 7 seater for families.
A decent diesel and supercharged V8 and V12 petrol options.
    Modern sat nav and ICE.
EAS compressor and ECU similar to the L322.
Updated body kit, but in P38 style not a copy of L322 or RRS.
    Better lighting all round.
Modern ECU's located at steering wheel height... Anywhere other than below the seat!!

    I suspect it'd be called an L405.
